Nina Sweetapple has a miserable life. Stuck with an abusive stepfather in a high-control religious cult, she finds a little respite at university despite her stepfather’s constant, manipulative attempts to have her thrown off the course, and his insistence that nobody would ever employ someone like her.

Professor Darian Epton is a world-renowned archaeologist, historian and author, and his choosing Nina to assist with an archaeological dig as part of her course is not random. He has an agenda, and Nina is the link he needs to one of the leaders of her religion, a creature Darian Epton has been seeking to destroy for two thousand years.

Meanwhile, in a house in Cheshire, the ex-pop star wife of reclusive but powerful philanthropist, Joseph Vorst, learns some unsavoury facts about her husband thanks to Alec Montrose, a reporter and conspiracy theorist hunting for an amazing story. He finds one, but its far, far too weird to ever publish because it involves other worlds, demons, demon worshippers and a very unusual woman called Misha Heath.

Joseph Vorst is anything but a kindly philanthropist, he too has an agenda, and his agenda requires the blood of his wife and an ancient curse, a curse that began on a hill outside of Jerusalem two thousand years ago.

Nina is fortunate, she finds people willing to help her escape her wretched existence, people like Misha Heath, whose lives are dedicated to rescuing those in torment and despair, but the torment runs deep in Nina, so deep she isn’t sure there’s a person inside left to rescue.
