The Layolam
Because we all have another universe in our heads
The Layolam is Misha's other world. The universe she created accidentally when she was in her late teens.
Although a peculiar concept, the Layolam features heavily in six of the novels and is mentioned in most of the others.
The Layolam is derived from Hebrew "L'Olam." Eternity.
Ish's other universe came to the attention of the world through her books, although it was clear that her "Layolam" was more than just imagination. When she first started visiting this universe she would return with flowers that were alien to this world and coins, as well as injuries. Her mother largely ignored this until Ish published her first book and it began to become clear that something strange was happening to her.
Unable to accept the idea that Ish truly was visiting another reality, her parents, assisted by Rick and Elijah Gwilym, attempted to have her committed to a mental hospital.
However, although by her mid-thirties, Ish's family were aware of her other worlds, it was not until one of the species indigenous to the Layolam attempted to (unsuccessfully) conquer the Earth that Ish became known to the British and American governments. It is this notoriety, as well as her own fear of herself and what she can do that helps to shape Ish's character over the course of the books.
The Layolam itself is a blanket term for a whole, thriving universe, connected by the abilities of Trans-Dimensional lifeforms (or Cross-Worldlings) presided over by an elected body of men and women known as the Olam Council. Although Ish herself is goddess of the Layolam, such responsibility frightens her and she does not guide her universe as perhaps she could.
Hadrian Nichmitz
Hadrian Nichmitz is physically identical to Darian Epton. He was created to be the archetypal villain for Ish's books, but because she always liked the idea that the bad guy might possibly win, she created a character who could both out-think and out-fight her.
There are times when Nichmitz shows genuine concern for both Ish and the Layolam. He detests knowing that he is only a creation, and fears what will happen to him should Ish die. He serves on the OLam Council and owns his own world, Sheloven, where he is it's undisputed king and lord.
Sheloven is a barren world that openly relies on slavery for its economic stability.
Octavian Danzig

Octavian is a telepath, and is Ish's best friend. He is a Taithian, from a world called Terinia, a civilisation feared by most other races due to their immense mental powers.
They are a diminutive people, pale skinned with large eyes. Their small suture combined with their inability to understand humour makes them resemble, in Ish's words "angry bush babies."

Kreliar

The Krelian people are builders, creating amazing architecture desired across the whole Layolam. But what the Krelian build is living, their towns and houses grow and change. They refuse to build with "dead" materials, with bricks or concrete.

Bloodgates

The strangest aspect pf the Layolam by far is the invention of Bloodgates.
Within Ish's world, the only way to travel across dimensions was with the help of a Cross-Worldling. However, once Nichmitz invented Bloodgates, it became possible to travel using a mixture of blood from a Cross-Worldling and blood indigenous to whatever world one wishes to visit.
Blood forever fights to return to its own world. Even a syringe full of alien blood will pull a body through the dimensional walls. Bloodgates can be either ingested or injected and work for a limited period of time only.

Ish's Influences

By the time Ish was fifteen she had met the King. Much of the beauty in her own creation is clearly influenced by what she saw in His City. The concept of travelling from place to place via "bloodgates" came from seeing the way the first Mazik she fought used human blood to transport itself to another location. The blank, inhuman mannerisms of the Taithians can probably be likened to the Malachim. Throughout the whole Layolam there are little nods to the real world in the oddest places.

Influences

H M Sealey has been living in an imaginary world most of her life. By the time she was at university, this world was an entire universe full of diverse species and strange worlds. It is this universe that finally found its way into the Kingdom Rising series.
Many times she has considered removing the Layolam from the story, but so much is built on Ish's universe that it would be impossible. To have one's imagination exposed as Ish's is would be an uncomfortable thing indeed.
