Three
Deva Rising

The Fire Rises And Ancient Rome Returns
The Fire Bringer, ancient cities and demonic plot
to bring forth something terrible.
And a dragon.

The first book written, even though it is the third in the series, Deva Rising introduces Jemma, Darian's intelligent, arrogant niece and daughter to Ahasuerus. The safety of a whole city hinges on whether she can not only fight the Mazikim, but her own self-serving nature.

Jemma Moray was not an ordinary fourteen-year-old.
Nor is she an ordinary twenty-six-year old.
Sometimes she’d quite like to be ordinary, but most of the time she likes being privy to the secret world she and her Uncle Darian can see.
It’s a scary world at times, because it exists just beyond the one we can see, it’s the world where what people say and do is too often manipulated by the demonic kingdom. Jemma belongs to the other Kingdom, the good one. She’s not so sure about her Uncle Darian though.

Jemma was raised by her Uncle Darian, raised to feel superior to the rest of mankind, even her best friends, but at the same time, raised knowing her purpose was to defend the world from the demonic kingdom, properly known as the Sitra Achra. The Sitra Achra has one all consuming desire, to kill, to steal and to destroy mankind. To claim the physical world for the demons, or the Mazikim as they’re called.

Demons are a horrible race. They get in to a person through evil thoughts, then, once inside, they slowly spread, like an infection, and the person’s mind becomes more and more shaped by its demonic guest. They don’t do the full head-turning possession thing these days, too many physiatrists and drugs and interested satellite television channels. Selfishness, hopelessness, anger, hatred, misery – all of these are gateways for the Mazikim into a life. Small wonder Jemma’s Uncle Darian calls ordinary people Puppets.

Just occasionally, the ongoing war between the two kingdoms spills out into the real world, and this is one of those times. The battleground is the City of Chester, and Jemma finds herself right in the centre of the war. If she loses, the people who live in the city will find their lives subject to despair, to broken families, to drug addiction and violence. If she wins, no-one will know, but the city will be able to thrive again.

It all hinges on whether or not Jemma can really be bothered to fight on behalf of people who would probably certify her insane if she ever told them the truth.
